Winter in Samoens – a perfect family ski holiday destination

Family Ski Holidays in Samoens -
The ideal destination

If you are looking for a family ski holiday with something for everybody, Samoëns is a wonderful destination. Yes, we may be slightly biased as we live here, but the family-friendliness was a big part of its attraction to us (the youngest member of the Absolute Alpine team – Barney – is not quite 15 months old yet).

If you are looking for a more reasons to help with resort selection for your family skiing trip, we have outlined a few of the key points below to help with your decision.

Enjoy some winter sledging in Samoens

Samoens – Perfect for Families

Picking a family holiday destination can be tricky and finding a ski resort that offers something for the whole family often results a lot of time scouring the internet. Until recently Samoëns had been exclusively the destination of the French family crowd. However, as the word spreads over its incredible snow record, historical beauty and brilliance as a family destination, those ‘in the know’ outside of France have started to enjoy this wonderful ski area more and more.

So why is Samoëns such a good destination for families?

There are many reasons to choose Samoëns as your holiday destination – here are just a few.

La Petite Ourse – A Perfect family chalet

Our two bedroomed chalet is the only catered chalet in Samoëns with a hot tub available exclusively for a family of four.

Get here quickly, easily & cheaply

Samoëns is best served by Geneva airport which offers a great selection of airlines and flights including competitively priced options from lower cost airlines like Easyjet and Flybe. If you are looking to take the train or drive, there are plenty of options here too. The journey from the UK can be done in a day (although taking two days with an overnight stop in the Champagne region on the way down is a winner for the adults!)

The transfer from Geneva airport is normally just under an hour with gentle roads along the way (none of those scary or treacherous mountain switchbacks). This short transfer is also great news for parents who do not have to worry about keeping the younger mountain adventurers entertained, fed and watered – something that needs considerably more planning for the 2.5 hours minimum needed to get to many other resorts such as the Three Valleys or Tignes.

Family fun on the slopes

A truly family-friendly village

Our beautiful, historical village is the only mountain resort in France to be awarded the ‘Caisse nationale des monuments historiques’ (the equivalent to a ‘national heritage’ status) and also boasts the Famille Plus classification for its family-friendliness. Sitting on the valley floor and pretty much flat throughout, exploring our stunning village is easy, even in snowy conditions or with a pushchair.

Some little ones admiring the delicious treats in the shop window

In addition to the gorgeous shops and boutiques in the village, there are plenty of exhibits and activities throughout the season to entertain the whole family. The Christmas market, fairground rides, ice sculpturing and live music are just some of the events that you can see during your holiday.

Skiing from Kindergarten to Black Pistes

Whatever the age or ability of your skiers, there is something for the whole family in the Grand Massif. There are various ski schools that cater for little ones from 3 years onwards. The Kindergarten ski area is a secure snowy playground for the 3-6 year olds where they can experience their first steps on skis under the close supervision of the professionals. With the little ones looked after, the bigger kids can enjoy their own lessons or make the most of the extensive and impressive ski region.

The new 'magic carpet' in Samoëns

A nice element of the beginners skiing at Samoëns is that it takes place up the mountain. I learned to ski alongside a road in resort as my friends, already accomplished skiers, disappeared off into the elusive mountains. At the top of the high-speed gondola, the nursery slopes in Samoëns offer the same sense of adventure and stunning views whilst remaining safe and a gentle introduction to the sport. The new covered travelator makes it even easier to get back to the start of the beginner slopes.

Family run, family-friendly chalets

As an independent family run business, we love having families in the chalets and are experienced in looking after guests of all ages. The professional chef that we employ throughout winter is not only there to make sure that the adults eat delicious food throughout your stay, but to make sure we can respond to the varying needs of the younger group members.

The Petite Ourse chalet - perfect for families

We offer an earlier kiddies tea should you wish to put them to bed or give them some quiet time with a board game or one of our children’s DVDs whilst you enjoy a glass of wine with your own dinner. What’s more, whether your children prefer to eat similar food to you or something simpler like chicken nuggets and chips, our chef will prepare everything from fresh ingredients (his homemade burgers are a big hit!)

There are DVDs, a Nintendo Wii and board games for the whole family, and be sure to pack a swim suit as the hot tubs views across the valley are popular with all ages! We are also ready with stair gates, high chairs, car seats and other kiddie accessories to make your stay away from home as easy as possible.
