Summer time in Samoens: for families who dare!

Most people who have come across our beautiful little corner of the world tend to know the village of Samoens for its winter sports and access to the extensive Grand Massif ski area.  Rarely do people realise that Samoens is also a fantastic summer location for outdoor adventure activities.

Unlike its more extreme neighbours of Morzine, a magnet for downhill mountain bikers, and Chamonix, where the challenging peaks have been attracting the world’s most hard-core mountaineers for centuries, laidback Samoens offers up a mixture of mountain experiences that are perfect for mums and dads who are looking for activities to suit the whole family, from young kids to daring teenagers needing a safe environment to let loose.

Family ski holiday packing guide

How to get your kids slope-ready and not have a nervous breakdown

It’s hard enough packing for your standard beach holiday, but when it comes to taking your family skiing, whether you’re first-timers or seasoned skiers, you may feel like you are facing a logistical nightmare. Firstly there is remembering everything you need before you leave home and fitting it all in your luggage, then once you’re at your destination every morning you need to ensure your kids are wrapped up with all the essentials they need for a day facing the elements.

The good news is you can rest assured your stresses will be left in the powder when you see how your kids enjoy the fresh air and fun that comes with being in the mountains. Plus, we’re here to help with two handy checklists; one for before you leave home, which includes all the essentials you should pack, and one for before you leave the chalet each morning to make sure your little and big snow angels arrive on the slopes with everything they need for a fantastic day.

Snowshoeing in the French Alps

You don’t have to be a daredevil to find yourself in untracked territory this winter. Go off-piste and escape the crowds by doing something a little different…

Donning a pair of skis or a snowboard and heading off-piste is not the only way to discover untouched terrain on the mountain. With a pair of snowshoes strapped to your feet and the help of a knowledgeable local guide, you’ll be amazed at the places you will find.

If you’re not sure what snowshoes are, they’re the lightweight contraptions, referred to as ‘raquettes’ by French locals due to the original wooden designs resembling the shape of a tennis racket, which you attach to your walking boots to distribute your weight and provide you with extra support when walking in deep snow.

Sunny Summers in Samoëns

Summer in Samoëns tends to be a sunny and uplifting affair. Of course, it’s the mountains so we can have an odd day of rain or a spectacular storm sweep through but the underlying climate is blue skies and sunshine (it’s 31°C as I write this.)

What better way to enjoy the sun than to take a splash into one of the various white water activities on offer? The Giffre meanders its way down the valley through Samoëns and offers incredible and exhilarating opportunities for all those who want to float along it.

Big smiles for the whole family

In this, another of our summer blog posts, we’ll give you information on white water fun.
