Walking in Samoens – A Wildlife Extravaganza!

Wildlife & Walking in the French Alps

Our beautiful surroundings here in Samoëns offer incredible opportunities to see spectacular, elusive and even rare wildlife and a guided walking holiday with our expert mountain man Bruno gives you the best chance of seeing these treats of nature.

Have you seen…?

Have you seen a marmotte? A chamois? An ibex? The majestic golden eagle? The rare and impressive bearded vulture (lamagier)? Well we have… In fact yesterday on a single hike our guided walking guests saw every one of these beautiful creatures in a true wildlife extravaganza!

Walking in Samoens

Walking in Samoens

Samoens is a wonderful spot for walking and hiking with plenty of well marked trails to follow. Our walking holidays offer an amazing chance to enjoy this mountain paradise and spot some of our unique flora and fauna.

French Alps - 20-Jul-13

Our guests and talented guide Bruno take some incredible photos – take a look at some highlights from our 2-peak guiding walking week on the 20th July. Believe it or not, this is only a small selection of our personal favourites all taken over the five days of guided walking.

Family Adventure in the Alps – A Great Summer Destination

A Family Holiday in the Alps – A Summer Adventure

Samoëns is a wonderful destination for a family ski holiday and is brilliantly suited to a week or two away with your loved ones. A proper, fully functioning & family-friendly village rather than a purpose built ski resort, the people and businesses of Samoëns are used to having children around all year.

More on our family-friendly village

Whether you are after a family ski holiday or an alternative to the more traditional summer holiday, the Alps have something to offer and Samoëns in particular is a wonderful family venue!

Snowshoeing in Samoëns – some highlights

Snowshoeing in Samoens – some video highlights

We are huge fans of snowshoeing and it’s a wonderful alternative to downhill skiing or snowboarding. With the modern light weight snow shoes on your feet, you’ve got access to some of the most beautiful and quietest part of the mountains.

We have a number of blog posts on snowshoeing (learn more about snowshoeing here) and now we’ve got a video to share with you that was made during our January snowshoeing trip.

This video was kindly put together by Ian and Jane with footage that was taken on a Go-Pro during an overnight trip to the Tête de Bostan.

A huge thanks to them for their effort and for sharing this with us.

We hope you enjoy the video…

Off-piste skiing Samoëns

Off-piste Skiing in Samoëns – a powder paradise

Samoëns sits within the extensive Grand Massif ski region, the fourth largest ski area in France. This impressive ski domain boasts over 265km of pistes (interestingly, this statistic hasn’t changed in at least seven years despite the creation of new pistes almost annually!)

Despite being a fantastic all round resort, particularly good for families (see more on family-friendliness in our previous post) one of the strengths of the Grand Massif and Samoëns is its off-piste skiing and boarding.

An off-piste adventure

This winter season has started brilliantly with an abundance of snow (250cm on the upper slopes – the best week 2 snow level in over eight years!) and we took to the slopes today to find some of that wonderful powder.

Sometimes the best spots are worth a little walk…

Ski Samoens – Winter is coming!

Ski Samoens – winter is coming to the Samoens valley

With snow arriving in the village this week, the Samoëns ski season is definitely well on its way… We took the opportunity to enjoy some early winter fun although there’s still time to relish some more of the alpine autumn before winter arrives fully.

Winter in the morning…

Autumn in the afternoon…

Read on to see some photos of our mountain adventures this week. Believe it or not, all these photos were taken over the last three days!

Family walking in Samoens – autumn fun!

Family walking in Samoens

So we’ve seen snow on the higher summits for a few weeks now (and even down to 1,200-1,300m on a couple of occasions – skiing in Samoens should be good this winter!) although the walking season definitely isn’t over yet. With such breathtaking autumn colours, it’s an incredible time of year to enjoy some alpine outings.

Enjoy autumn in the Alps!

On the way to refuge de Sales

This weekend, we took to the hills with some friends for a family day out. Read on to find out more…

Even the panoramic photo software doesn't do the scenery justice...

Walking Holidays in the French Alps – Photo(s) of the Week

Walking holidays in the French Alps – Photo of the week

This week saw our walking guests take to the hills for a couple of multi-day treks. With access to more remote areas and even more wildlife, it’s been another difficult week for choosing a single photo of the week.

If you would like the chance to capture such beautiful images, why not take a look at our French Alps walking holidays. Our calendar for 2013 will be announced shortly!

The Queen of the Alps

Just when you thought that you’d seen all the photos of the Cascade de Rouget or “Queen of the Alps”, Bruno pulls this one out of the bag…

Walking Holidays – Photo of the Week

Walking Holidays – Photo of the Week

It’s been a while since our last blog update and a lot has been happening here in Samoëns. Our various walking holidays and family adventure holidays have been a great hit (why not take a look at our latest reviews on Trip Advisor) and we have too many photos again to limit to just one photo of the week…

An impressive close up

This wonderfully detailed photo of a fly was taken by one of our guests who was introduced to the world of close-up photography by our guide Bruno that morning. Julia clearly has a great eye for macro photography!

A stunning close up of a fly...
